1982 promises to be the most critical year for the Free World since the end of World War II. A serious-perhaps unbridgeable split has developed between the United States and its allies in Western Europe over reaction to the crisis in Poland. When the Polish government cracked down on its internal critics on December 13, 1981, a stage was set for a most serious squabble within NATO. At stake is the survival of this key Western defense structure formed in 1949 to thwart further Soviet inroads in Europe.
